Testimony I was raised in a pastor’s home. My father was a third-generation minister; my grandfather pastored for more than 50 years and my great-grandfather was a Methodist circuit-riding preacher in the Oklahoma Territory. My mother was the organist and choir director for the church. Since I was old enough to hold a hymnal, I have been singing in church. I began leading worship when I was 11 years old, learning how to play worship choruses on a K-Mart “Blue Light Special” guitar (no joke, my first guitar was literally purchased at K-Mart as a “Blue Light Special”). I gave my life to the Lord when I was five, but in high school I really began to struggle with my identity and my walk of faith. At my worst, in the winter of 1981, I was so fearful and anti-social that I began carrying a 5-inch lock-blade knife to school every day. I lived in a daily world of private chaos and torment. Some time in late January, a friend invited me to a youth crusade at his church with evangelist Rich Wilkerson. That night, I experienced a powerful transformation in my life. Since then, even though I have experienced failures due to my human nature, I have never doubted God’s love for me or my devotion to live for Him. He has been miraculously faithful to me time and time again. I met my wife, Juliana, in January of 1984 at Bethesda Community Church, where we both played in the church orchestra. In May of that year, the worship leader for the youth group suggested that the two of us sing a duet together. As we sang Truth’s “Jesus Never Fails” for the first time, it was like a sudden confirmation from God that we were destined for a life together of music and ministry. We were married in September of 1984, and have been serving God faithfully ever since. |
