out.of.nothing

History

The story of out.of.nothing is one of longstanding relationships coming together to form a unified body of musicians who strive to glorify God through their writing and musical performance. The band was officially formed in the late 1990s under the leadership of David and Juliana Barnett during the recording of “Born to Give You Praise”, a full-length CD of original music from the Barnetts. The band’s first public performance under the name X Nihilo was August 24, 1997. The band performed under that name until March of 2003, when they officially “translated” to out.of.nothing.

Many of the band members worship and minister together at Bethesda Community Church in Fort Worth, Texas, where they are under the pastoral leadership of Senior Pastor Des Evans and Minister of Music J. Daniel Smith. However, most of the band knew each other years earlier through school, community, or professional music relationships. Each individual brings a wealth of musical creativity and ability to the band, and together they form a unique sound that is distinctive, yet accessible to the listener.

The out.of.nothing sound embraces a kaleidoscope of musical influences, from classic Bach to classic rock. The multiple instrumental talents among the members of the band gives them great flexibility in their style. They weave a tapestry of sounds and ideas that incorporate such diverse genres as classical, rock, jazz, celtic, latin, world music, and folk – even an occasional touch of jailhouse blues! Solidifying this eclectic mix is the common bond of genuine love, friendship, and musical respect that allows out.of.nothing to play with an almost intuitive vibe of togetherness.

Another great distinctive of out.of.nothing is the creativity present in the writing. The band is committed to composing and performing original music. The depth of lyrical content is gracefully complemented by the finely crafted musical score. Words and melody come together to form cohesive, evocative compositions with weight and significance.

A concert with out.of.nothing is truly an event to remember. No two performances are ever the same, as the band strives to make each one unique and memorable. It is typical for the group to deviate from the playlist as the force of the moment and the direction of the Holy Spirit often take the band in unanticipated directions. In the wandering, though, comes a purity of emotion that leaves the listener feeling all the more a part of the moment, an innocent meandering down the common path of musical and spiritual discovery with out.of.nothing.

Whether at an outdoor festival, in a foreign country, playing a major performance venue, in a recording studio, or conducting a concert in a house of worship, the eclectic style and abilities of out.of.nothing make the band feel at home in any environment.
